Telegram has put the proposal up for a community vote on the TON Vote platform. Voting will remain open for one week, with voting power determined by each participant’s TON balance. The team emphasizes that only the token’s name and ticker would change.
Why Gram
Telegram says the initiative reflects the significant changes the network has undergone in recent months. The blockchain is now ten times faster, while transaction fees have been reduced sixfold. The company has also assumed a leading role in the network’s development and is becoming its largest validator.
The network’s creators originally named the token Gram in the TON white paper, and Telegram believes now is the right time to return to that name.
“This name has never disappeared from the codebase,” the project team said.
What Remains Unchanged
The blockchain itself will continue to be called TON and The Open Network. Only the token’s name and ticker are being updated.
Balances, addresses, smart contracts, NFTs, staking services, and DeFi applications will continue to function exactly as before. No swaps, bridges, claims, or migrations are planned, and token holders do not need to take any action.
The team also warns that the update could trigger a surge in scam attempts:
“Any website, bot, or link offering to help you claim GRAM or migrate TON is part of a fraudulent scheme and should not be trusted.”
