Amid a lull in hostilities in the Middle East, Congressman Buddy Carter has submitted a nomination to the Nobel Committee.
The U.S. Congress has officially nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his involvement in resolving the conflict between Israel and Iran. The nomination was submitted by Republican Representative from Georgia, Buddy Carter, who cited in his letter to the Norwegian committee Trump's "historic" role in ending the 12-day war and preventing an escalation that could have led to a nuclear threat.
Background of the Ceasefire
The ceasefire was declared on Monday evening following intense fighting, including Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and retaliatory attacks from Iran, such as missile launches at a U.S. base in Qatar. Carter emphasized that Trump publicly stated an imminent truce, something he believes influenced the situation and helped reduce the risk of the conflict expanding.
The statement also notes that Iran issued an advance warning of its actions. No American military personnel were harmed. Carter sees this as evidence of a delicate diplomatic balance in which Trump allegedly played a key role.
Previous Nominations and Context
This is not Trump’s first nomination for the Peace Prize. He had previously been nominated for diplomatic initiatives, including the so-called Abraham Accords. However, Carter describes this latest episode as the former president’s most significant involvement in an international conflict.
He also emphasized that Trump "embodies the ideals" of the Nobel Prize, such as the pursuit of peace and global stability.
Carter was joined by fellow Republican Darrell Issa, who also submitted a recommendation to the committee in support of Trump.
Skepticism and Market Reaction
Despite political support, users of the crypto prediction platform Polymarket assess Trump's chances of winning the Nobel Peace Prize as extremely low—no higher than 8%.
