The Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E.), a high-profile initiative launched by U.S. President Donald Trump to symbolize his pledge to aggressively slash the size of the federal government, has been quietly disbanded. The agency ended its mandate eight months early and without any public announcement.

The status of the program was confirmed by Scott Kupor, Director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), who told Reuters, "That doesn't exist." Kupor added that D.O.G.E. is no longer a "centralized entity," becoming the first administration official to publicly comment on the shutdown of the agency. Critics claim the initiative delivered few, if any, measurable savings.

DOGE’s Functions Absorbed by Other Agencies

The initiative, which launched in January during the early months of Trump's second term, made dramatic forays into Washington, aiming to rapidly shrink federal agencies, cut their budgets, or redirect their work toward the President’s priorities.

According to Kupor and documents reviewed by Reuters, many of D.O.G.E.'s core functions have now been absorbed by the OPM, the federal government's human resources office.

The quiet fadeout of D.O.G.E. starkly contrasts with the intense, months-long, government-wide effort to draw attention to its work. President Trump, his advisors, and cabinet secretaries actively touted the initiative on social media.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who initially spearheaded D.O.G.E., regularly promoted its work on his X platform and once brandished a chainsaw to publicly advertise his efforts to "cut bureaucracy."

D.O.G.E. claimed to have slashed tens of billions of dollars in expenditures, but outside financial experts were unable to verify these claims because the unit did not provide detailed public financial accounting of its operations.

Signals of Demise

Though administration officials never openly declared D.O.G.E.’s closure, signals of its demise began appearing last summer following a public spat between Musk and Trump.

Despite this, the President later signed an executive order decreeing that D.O.G.E. would last through July 2026. However, information about D.O.G.E. subsequently disappeared from public discourse, coinciding with a perceived thaw in the relationship between Trump and Musk.

At the time of its launch, the initiative’s acronym, D.O.G.E., was immediately associated with the popular meme coin Dogecoin. Rumors circulated within the crypto community that the token might be utilized as part of the department's operations.

However, Musk dispelled these rumors in March, stating that the similarity between the government agency's abbreviation and the token's ticker was merely a coincidence.

Despite Musk's denial, many in the crypto space found the coincidence difficult to believe, given the businessman's well-documented history of market influence. Musk has repeatedly been accused of pumping various cryptocurrencies, including Dogecoin, and his activity on has frequently served as the catalyst for launching numerous new meme coins.
