OpenAI has launched a preview version of GPT-4.5, claiming that the new AI has higher emotional intelligence (EQ) and enhanced creativity compared to previous models. However, users have raised concerns about its high cost and questionable improvements.
The new model was introduced on February 27 as a test version. According to OpenAI, GPT-4.5 has better contextual understanding, improved fact-linking abilities, and more natural communication. The company emphasized that the model makes fewer errors (hallucinations) and is more reliable across various topics.
"We expect the new version to provide less biased responses and ensure more reliable discussions on a wide range of issues, including creative tasks," OpenAI stated.
Downsides of GPT-4.5: Weaker Logic at x20 Price
Despite claims of improved "emotionality" and a more conversational style, OpenAI admitted that GPT-4.5 underperforms in logical reasoning compared to other versions like the o-series.
According to AI researcher Aran Komatsuzaki, API access to GPT-4.5 is 15–20 times more expensive than GPT-4o. Analyst Ashutosh Shrivastava called OpenAI’s pricing strategy "insane" on social media.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed that the new AI is not a breakthrough in performance, describing it as a "massive but costly model."
The model is already available for free to ChatGPT Pro users. Plus and Team plan subscribers will gain access next week, while Enterprise and Edu users will have to wait an additional week.
First Impressions from Users
Dan Shipper, head of the AI platform Every, noted that GPT-4.5 is not particularly intelligent but acts more like a "social companion."
"OpenAI is betting not on a smart assistant but on a ‘friendly AI,’" he stated.
However, Shipper also pointed out that the model sometimes struggles to follow instructions properly.
Competition and the Future of OpenAI
The release of GPT-4.5 comes amid increasing pressure from competitors. In January, Chinese startup High Flyer launched DeepSeek R1, developed at a fraction of OpenAI’s costs.
A week ago, Elon Musk’s xAI also introduced an upgraded version of its AI model — Grok 3.
Despite this, Altman claims that AI development costs are dropping tenfold every year. He stated that processing one token in GPT-4o is 150 times cheaper than in GPT-4 within just a year.
GPT-5 is expected to launch within the next few months. The free version of ChatGPT will receive unlimited access to it, and the model will include multiple upgraded versions, including o3.
