On May 5, 2026, OpenAI announced the rollout of GPT-5.5 Instant in ChatGPT. The company said the model should become the default for all users within two days.
“The new model is more accurate with facts, especially in areas where mistakes carry a high cost — including medicine, law, and finance,” the press release states.
OpenAI also says the model performs better with images, math and science questions, and more accurately determines when web search is needed. The company adds that responses are now shorter and more natural in tone.
OpenAI is also changing how memory works: according to the company, ChatGPT now does a better job of using context from saved memories, chat history, uploaded files, and connected Gmail accounts. A new tool called “memory sources” has also been introduced. It shows what data was used to generate a response and lets users correct or delete that information.
