MetaMask co-founder Dan Finlay did not rule out the possibility of launching a native wallet token but emphasized that any announcement would come exclusively through official channels. The project remains in the discussion phase, though the evolving regulatory landscape could present an opportunity.

During an interview on the "Crypto Beat" podcast, Finlay smiled and answered “maybe” when asked about the launch of a MetaMask token. He noted that if the project moves forward, the information would be published inside the wallet itself.

“It won’t be a message from a random account, it won’t be an SMS or email — we don’t collect those. Everything will be inside the wallet and on the official website,” he explained.

Regulations and Longstanding Plans

Although there is no official announcement, the idea of launching a token named $MASK has been discussed since 2021. At that time, MetaMask engineer Erik Marks suggested using the token as a tool to expand community participation.

Later, ConsenSys CEO Joseph Lubin fueled expectations with a tweet saying “Wen $MASK?” In 2022, he clarified that the token would be part of the “progressive decentralization” of ConsenSys verticals.

According to Finlay, the softer stance of the Trump administration provides more room for token launches. He added, however, that “securities laws are still in effect,” and launching tokens remains a gray area for many projects.

That may soon change. New SEC Chair Paul Atkins has already outlined regulatory priorities. According to him, the agency will shift from “enforcement through lawsuits” to working through “rules,” “guidance,” and “exemptions.”

Concerns About Scams

Finlay noted that speculation about a possible token is fueling phishing attacks. He said the rumors create fertile ground for scammers. He reminded users that MetaMask does not send out messages and never asks for actions outside official channels.

Competition Is Growing

As of 2024, MetaMask has around 30 million active monthly users. The project is part of Ethereum developer ConsenSys and employs around 500 people. Finlay acknowledged that the team has recently focused heavily on improving user experience in order to maintain its lead amid growing competition from wallets like Rainbow and Rabby.
