Marc Andreessen, co-founder of a16z, highlighted a shift in the tech landscape in a recent interview: AI is reducing the need for large teams and making it easier to launch products solo.
Andreessen explained that team size directly affects flexibility. According to him, managing organizations with hundreds or thousands of employees makes it hard to change strategy frequently without disrupting operations.
“If you have an organization of 100, 1,000, or 10,000 people, you can’t change the plan every day — it will lead to chaos and people will simply start leaving,” he said.
He compared development to the film industry: a director cannot rewrite the script in the middle of filming, unlike a book author who works alone and controls the entire process.
At the same time, Andreessen noted that before the AI boom, major products built by small teams were rare. Examples include Bitcoin, Minecraft, WhatsApp, and Instagram. He believes AI is changing this model. A single person now has the tools to handle the full cycle — from development to launch.
“With the rise of AI, there will be more of these one-person companies,” he said.
