Developer activity in crypto ecosystems has dropped sharply over the past year. On GitHub, the number of commits — publications of new code — in crypto repositories fell by roughly 75%.

Developers Move Into Artificial Intelligence

GitHub attracted around 36 M new developers in 2025, and the number of commits grew by 25%. The main flow of new projects is in AI: the platform hosts more than 4.3 M AI repositories, projects for large language models increased by 178%, and generative AI is drawing over 1 M developers every month.

Growth is visible in Jupyter Notebook (+75%), Dockerfile (+120%), and TypeScript, which became the most popular language on GitHub after gaining more than 1 M contributors.

Decline In Blockchain Ecosystem Activity

Ethereum lost 34% of weekly developers (2,811), Solana — 40% (942), Base — 52% (378). Newer networks are struggling even more: Aptos — 60%, BNB Chain — 85%, Celo — 52%. Growth continues only in wallet infrastructure (+6%, 308 developers).

Sector Becomes More Professional But Shrinks

According to Electric Capital, the number of active developers in the crypto industry fell from 31,000 in 2022 to 23,600 in 2024, with analysts forecasting further declines. Experienced specialists with over two years of tenure increased by 27% and account for 70% of all commits. The main outflow comes from newcomers with less than a year of experience (-58%).

Historically, activity in the crypto industry follows market cycles. Currently, AI is creating an alternative with large-scale funding and commercial demand, making the migration of specialists from blockchain more sustainable.
