China is considering limiting overseas access to its most advanced domestic AI models, including systems that have not yet been released. According to Reuters, Chinese authorities increasingly view these technologies as strategic assets and are discussing measures to tighten control over their international distribution.
Reuters sources say Chinese authorities are also discussing stricter accountability for technology leaks, along with new rules governing funding for AI startups. The final version of the proposed measures has not yet been finalized.
The push for tighter controls comes as Chinese AI models rapidly gain popularity outside the country. Thanks to their lower cost, they have significantly expanded their presence in the global market. According to Reuters, this has led Beijing to view its most advanced AI developments as a technology whose international distribution should be subject to government oversight.
The United States has taken a similar approach. Washington has already restricted foreign access to some of its most advanced AI models, citing national security concerns.
