Coinbase’s Layer 2 Ethereum network, Base, experienced its first-ever block halt. According to Basescan, the incident occurred on August 5 and disrupted transactions for around 19 minutes.

First Block Halt Since Launch

On August 5, 2025, at 06:15 UTC, block production on the Base network stopped. Analysts at TokenInsight reported that the issue affected core processes, including deposits, withdrawals, dApp functionality, and transactions, at block number 33792704. Thirty minutes later, the Base team confirmed that the network had been restored and was operating normally under monitoring.

Although the incident was brief, it raised concerns among DeFi users.

Base Surpasses Solana in Token Launches

Meanwhile, Base continues to grow rapidly. Since late July, it has consistently led in the number of tokens launched, overtaking Solana. On July 24, Base surpassed its competitor for the first time, and by July 27, it had registered 54,000 new tokens compared to Solana’s 25,460.

This growth is driven by the relaunch of the Base App with integrated platforms Zora and Farcaster. The new functionality allows users to mint tokens directly from social media posts. On August 2, 39,778 tokens were issued on Zora, accounting for 64,6% of all tokens launched across both networks.

Focus on Entertainment Content

In March 2025, NFT protocol Zora launched the ZORA token on Base. The project team emphasized that the token was created purely for entertainment purposes and does not grant users any governance rights or equity in the company.

Base Prepares for Major Upgrades

Amid rising interest, the Base team has announced upcoming improvements aimed at making the network faster, cheaper, and more decentralized.

Planned enhancements include:

  • reducing confirmation time to 200 ms.
  • lowering transaction fees below $0.01.
  • increasing throughput to 200 TPS with a long-term target of 1 million TPS.

Additionally, there are plans to raise the gas limit from 25 million to 250 million per second and migrate protocol logic to Ethereum Layer 1 to enable broader community participation in governance.

Aavegotchi Migrates from Polygon to Base

In April, Web3 platform Aavegotchi abandoned the Polygon blockchain and fully transitioned to Base. The decision was supported by 93,5% of voters. The team stated that Polygon lacked updates and failed to offer solutions for gaming protocols. In contrast, Base and Arbitrum demonstrated better performance, technological advancement, and user experience.
