Yuga Labs co-founder Greg Solano (Greg “Garga” Solano) has unexpectedly shifted the public perception of the Otherside project by declaring that its goal is to become a “Roblox killer powered by ApeCoin.” His brief reply to a user’s question on X sparked a wave of discussion, ranging from memes to serious debates about the future of Web3 gaming.
More Than Just an NFT Metaverse
Solano’s statement came in response to a question from a Bored Ape Yacht Club member who asked, “I honestly have no idea what Otherside is.” Solano replied with just four words: “Roblox killer powered by ApeCoin.” This made it clear that Yuga is not limiting itself to virtual spaces or social platforms. The focus is on building an open content economy where users create and sell games, worlds, and digital assets - all transacted in tokens and without the need for platform approval.
Unlike traditional platforms, Otherside will leverage blockchain infrastructure. In-game assets and currency will exist as NFTs and crypto tokens. Creators will be able to monetize their content directly, without going through moderation or splitting profits with a centralized platform.
UGC Market Figures and Yuga’s Motivation
In 2024, Roblox paid creators around $923 million, and in 2025 it expects to surpass the $1 billion mark. However, up to half of this revenue is retained by the platform. Fortnite, through its Creator Economy 2.0 initiative, distributes 40% of net revenue from its in-game store each month to creators of “islands.”
Yuga aims to follow a similar model, but with improved economics for users:
- Revenue through ApeCoin
- No platform fees
- Immediate payouts
In 2025, the ApeCoin DAO has already discussed proposals to launch a dedicated ApeChain network with high throughput and low transaction costs. One proposal even suggested replacing the DAO with a more streamlined governance structure called ApeCo.
What Yuga Already Has
Solano returned as CEO in February 2025, promising to remove internal limitations and accelerate the launch of Otherside. The company has resources: funds raised during the last bull cycle, a tech demo with record engagement, and a functioning token infrastructure. Otherside’s internal currency already runs on ApeCoin.
According to the team, the main challenge is building content and mechanics that can sustain user engagement. The next phase of public testing (Voyager) is scheduled for late 2025 and will be the first real test of whether the “Roblox killer” claim holds up.
