A viral video of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin kneeling before a robot and making a sound resembling a “meow” has sparked a wave of reactions across the crypto community. The clip quickly spread on X (formerly Twitter), triggering a mix of memes, jokes, and concerns about Ethereum’s future.
“The future of Ethereum is in the hands of this man… Meow,” tweeted crypto influencer Wendy O.
Phil Fogel, co-founder of Cork Protocol, shared the video, acknowledging that a large part of his career and capital depends on Buterin, yet the video somehow reinforced his optimism.
User The Count of Monte Crypto posted that while he doesn’t see anything inherently wrong with Buterin’s behavior, he admitted that his financial dependency on Vitalik’s actions is stressful.
ETH Weakens Further as Bitcoin Dominance Grows
Buterin has not yet commented publicly on the video. Meanwhile, Ethereum’s price continues to slide.
According to CoinMarketCap, at the time of writing, ETH is trading at $1,795, down 13.47% over the past month. Since December 2024, when Ethereum was priced above $4,000, the token has lost nearly 55% of its value.
Alex Thorn, Head of Research at Galaxy, reported that ETH’s relative strength to Bitcoin has dropped to its lowest point in nearly four years. Since Ethereum transitioned to Proof-of-Stake (PoS) in 2022, it has declined 74% against BTC.
Crypto trader sgp pointed out the irony: while ETH shows -5% drops in one-minute candles, Buterin is “meowing at a robot” — a situation he believes is doing little to inspire market confidence.
Investor and influencer Alex Becker took a contrarian stance, saying that ETH below $2,000 presents a prime long-term buying opportunity:
“I don’t understand how anyone can see ETH under $2K and not think it’s a massive gain in a few years.”
Nic Carter, partner at Castle Island Ventures, linked Ethereum’s recent weakness to value migration to Layer-2 networks and the community’s lukewarm response to new token launches.
Buterin’s Eccentric Public Persona Isn’t New
This isn’t the first time Vitalik Buterin’s eccentric behavior has drawn attention. At Token2049 in Singapore in September 2024, he sang live on stage — a moment that was well-received both by the audience and on social media.
However, the reaction this time is more polarized, with some celebrating his quirky personality and others questioning the optics amid Ethereum’s market decline.
