According to Vitalik Buterin, the dev team has pivoted the updated roadmap to focus heavily on post-quantum security, robust user privacy, and stripping back base-layer complexity.

Over the past few years, core contributors completely re-evaluated Ethereum's scaling playbook. Verkle trees got shelved in favor of superior PBT structures, while VDFs and minor EVM optimizations lost their spot on the priority list.
New core feature is the integration of AI-assisted formal verification (FV). Buterin emphasized that achieving provably bug-free, rock-solid code across the protocol is only feasible now thanks to modern AI models.
Devs plan to leverage these AI tools to deploy recursive STARK proofs across every layer of the network stack.
"Ethereum will be quantum-safe. Ethereum will put users' privacy first. Ethereum will be secure. Ethereum will be censorship-resistant. Ethereum will be highly performant and scalable while satisfying the above. And Ethereum will be Lean," Buterin stated.
Rethinking scaling standards
The new roadmap introduces several concepts that weren't even on the radar in 2023, including native rollups alongside futures markets for blobs and gas.
On top of that, researchers are exploring replacing the EVM altogether with simpler, more efficient instruction set architectures like leanISA or RISC-V.
Instead of trying to brute-force scale every single onchain action, engineers are building specialized execution pathways for heavy-load use cases like token transfers, DEX swaps, and privacy protocols.
Despite the ambitious roadmap update, Ethereum slipped 2.5% over the last 24 hours, breaking down below $1,900.
