On December 12, a lone miner bypassed the industry giants to solve a Bitcoin block independently, claiming the full reward. The win defied statistical odds, which projected over 80 years of continuous operation for success. On-chain explorer Mempool confirmed the block capture.

The miner employed solo-mining software from CKpool. By solving block 927,474, they pocketed a total payout of 3.133 BTC (~$281,000 at the time of mining).

This final figure combines the fixed block subsidy of 3.125 BTC and transaction fees, which amounted to 0.008 BTC.

CKpool developer Con Kolivas congratulated user "1Ng9~VoQz" on X. He noted the winner’s hashrate was just 270 TH/s.

Kolivas pegged the probability of such an outcome at 1 in 30,000 per day. The mathematical expectation for a miner with these specs suggests finding a block roughly once every 82 years.

Technical Details

The miner's hashrate was powered by three devices delivering about 90 TH/s each. This output aligns with the specifications of common air-cooled Antminer S19 ASIC miners. For context, the total Bitcoin network hashrate sat at 1.15 ZH/s on December 11. This solo miner contributed a microscopic 0.00002% to that global total.

To put this in perspective, leading public mining companies MARA and IREN manage capacities of 59.4 EH/s and 50 EH/s, respectively. Their resources exceed the private miner's equipment by millions of times.

Owners of small-scale setups typically join mining pools. This strategy guarantees stable, albeit proportionally split, income.

Solo mining with low hashrate operates on a lottery principle: participants forgo regular small payments for a faint shot at the full block reward.

Such on-chain anomalies occur periodically. On March 11, another solo miner secured 3.15 BTC (~$252,000 at the time) using a miniature device. The odds of that specific win were 1 in 1.6 billion.
