Project Reservoir, which developed one of the most popular APIs for working with NFTs, has announced the complete shutdown of its platform and related services on October 15, 2025. New registrations on the platform have already been disabled, and current users will be able to continue using the services until the stated date.

Transition to Alternatives and Code Open-Sourcing

To mitigate the impact of the shutdown, Reservoir has partnered with 0xSequence and Alchemy — users are being encouraged to switch to these solutions. In addition, the platform has open-sourced all of its components, including its indexer and SDK, allowing developers to adapt the infrastructure for their own needs.

Reservoir also stated that it is not completely leaving the Web3 space: the team will now focus on developing Relay Protocol — a tool for token swapping and purchasing across multiple blockchains using any currency.

Community Disappointed by the Decision

The decision to wind down its NFT operations sparked a reaction among developers and users. Some highlighted the high quality of the API and expressed regret over the project’s exit. Others — such as Ivan on Tech (Ivan Liljeqvist) — immediately suggested alternatives, particularly the API from Moralis, citing its reliability and compliance with industry security standards (SOC2).

A user under the nickname akincibor.base.eth suggested that the pricing model may have been a contributing issue — with too large a gap between the free version and the $400 per month paid tier.

New Wave of NFT Platform Shutdowns

The departure of Reservoir aligns with a broader trend. Amid declining activity in the digital art sector, an increasing number of projects are pausing or ceasing operations altogether.

On April 30, 2025, the NFT marketplace X2Y2 — one of the first competitors to OpenSea — will shut down. The founder, known by the pseudonym TP, explained the decision by citing the inability to sustain development under current conditions.

Even earlier, on November 27, 2024, the crypto exchange Kraken shut down its NFT marketplace, citing the need to reallocate resources. In December 2024, the brand RTFKT, acquired by Nike, ceased operations, followed by LG’s similar announcement in March 2025 regarding the closure of its LG Art Lab platform.

Against the backdrop of a general NFT market downturn, Reservoir’s exit is seen not as an exception, but as a continuation of an expected trend.
