OpenAI Starts Predicting User Age Based on Behavior

If the algorithm determines an account belongs to a teenager, it will forcibly enable censorship filters.

Sam Altman’s team has overhauled its approach to safety in ChatGPT: the neural network no longer trusts the date of birth provided at sign-up. Instead, an AI analyzer is now at work, scanning the user’s digital profile and attempting to guess if they are 18. The team stated that the mechanism is already active on all standard accounts.

How the Monitoring Works

The system evaluates a combination of indirect signals. It takes into account when the account was created, activity hours (whether the user is chatting at night or during school hours), and specific communication patterns. This data set is cross-referenced with the stated age. If the model suspects it is dealing with a minor, or if there is insufficient data for analysis, the account is automatically switched to safe mode. The system ignores the user’s own opinion.

Accounts that fall under suspicion lose access to generating content on sensitive topics. OpenAI has compiled a list of banned categories, relying on research into child psychology.

The restricted list includes:

  • Graphic violence and gore.
  • Sexual and romantic role-play.
  • Scenes of self-harm.
  • Viral challenges encouraging risky behavior.
  • Topics related to rigid beauty standards and eating disorders.

The company also added parental control tools allowing the chatbot to be forcibly disabled during specific hours.

KYC for Unblocking

If the algorithm makes a mistake and labels an adult as a teenager, full access can only be restored through identity verification. Here, OpenAI has followed the path of crypto exchanges: to confirm age, one must pass a check via the Persona service. This requires taking a selfie and providing documents.

In the European Union, the feature will be rolled out in the coming weeks, taking into account local data protection laws.
