OpenAI has begun rolling out its GPT-5.2 lineup, comprising Instant, Thinking, and Pro versions. Subscribers to Plus, Team, and Enterprise plans gained access on December 11, while free users will see the update the following day.

The developers segmented the lineup for specific use cases. The GPT-5.2 Thinking version demonstrated human expert-level performance for the first time on the GDPval test, which benchmarks tasks across 44 distinct professions.

The model features an upgraded reasoning engine with long-context capabilities, plus enhanced tools for spreadsheets and presentations.

The Instant model retains the conversational style of version 5.1 but pivots toward technical writing, translation, and educational guides.

The Pro version is built as the most reliable tool for complex problem-solving in programming and scientific research.

“The new models are already available via API and Codex. OpenAI noted that the previous version, GPT-5.1, will remain accessible to paid subscribers as a legacy model for three months”, said the announcement.

Security Threat

The release arrives alongside alarming security data. On December 10, the project team acknowledged that the new models pose a tangible cyber threat.

Internal benchmarks revealed that the base GPT-5 successfully executed 27% of hacking tasks. Version GPT-5.1 pushed this success rate to 76%, performing exploits previously considered impossible for algorithms.
