Nvidia has announced the acquisition of Hugging Face, a platform for developing and distributing AI models, for $13B. The deal will be Nvidia’s largest acquisition to date and is expected to close in 2027, subject to regulatory approval.

Hugging Face allows developers to download, modify, and run open models on their own hardware. More than 18 million developers and 200,000 companies use the platform.

Nvidia will retain the Hugging Face brand and said the platform will remain open to the wider community.

“Users will still be able to choose the models, cloud providers, and chips they use,” the company said.

The acquisition will also expand the market for Nvidia’s AI chips. The wider distribution of open models could increase the number of developers and companies using Nvidia’s computing power and reduce the company’s dependence on its largest customers, including OpenAI and Anthropic.

Hugging Face Previously Turned Down Nvidia’s Investment

In late 2025, Hugging Face rejected a $500M investment from Nvidia at a $7B valuation. The decision was partly motivated by a desire to avoid becoming overly dependent on a single major investor.

At the same time, Nvidia was already among Hugging Face’s investors, alongside Google, Amazon, and Intel.
