MetaMask has introduced a new way to create and recover wallets using Google or Apple accounts. Users no longer need to memorize a 12-word phrase: the system automatically generates it in the background while keeping asset control fully in the hands of the owner.
How Social Login Works in MetaMask
Previously, accessing MetaMask required a recovery phrase – 12 words that users had to store securely and never share. This phrase gave complete control over the wallet but was often lost, especially by beginners.
Now it is enough to log in with a Google or Apple ID and create a strong password. After that, the wallet is ready to use. Recovery also works through social login: the SRP (Secret Recovery Phrase) remains inaccessible to MetaMask or anyone else. It is stored locally and decrypted only when the correct login credentials and password are provided.
Balancing Web2 Convenience and Web3 Security
Social login makes working with the wallet easier without compromising asset control. MetaMask emphasizes that even in this system, the self-custodial model remains intact: no centralized entity can access the wallet without the user’s data.
MetaMask reminds users that when using social login, the responsibility for securing the password lies entirely with them. If the password is lost, access recovery will not be possible.
MetaMask has published a separate guide with a detailed technical explanation of how social login works. Installing and setting up the new feature takes only a few minutes.
