Crypto exchange Kraken is overhauling its cross-chain infrastructure, selecting Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) to replace LayerZero. The decision follows the massive exploit of the Kelp DAO bridge, an event that has triggered a broader industry-wide pivot toward more secure messaging standards.

The $292 million catalyst

The move was prompted by last month's attack on the liquid restaking protocol Kelp, which exposed critical vulnerabilities in legacy cross-chain architectures. In what has become the largest DeFi exploit of 2026, hackers drained 116,500 rsETH (approximately $292 million) via a bridge powered by LayerZero.

LayerZero later admitted to a configuration error within its verifier network — the system responsible for securing high-value transactions. This admission sparked a massive liquidity exodus, with projects migrating an estimated $3 billion in total value away from LayerZero.

Kraken is the latest major player to follow suit, naming Chainlink CCIP as the exclusive service provider for its suite of wrapped tokens, most notably its bitcoin-backed kBTC.

Technical migration

Under the new framework, CCIP will facilitate asset transfers using the Cross-Chain Token standard. While the infrastructure for moving assets changes, Kraken will retain its role as the primary issuer and custodian, ensuring full control over the underlying collateral.

The migration initially covers a strategic list of networks:

By integrating CCIP, Kraken joins other industry leaders in adopting Chainlink's "defense-in-depth" security model, aiming to insulate its $260 million kBTC market cap from the risks that plagued earlier cross-chain solutions.
