Jeju, a popular tourist destination in South Korea, plans to launch NFT-based tourist maps aimed at Millennials and Gen Z, whose visit rate to the island is reportedly lower than desired. According to the announcement, these digital maps will become available in the second half of 2025 and will offer discounts for attractions and travel subsidies.
Digitalizing Tourism
As reported by the Maeil Business Newspaper, the NFT tourist maps will be tested prior to their official launch. Authorities hope the use of blockchain and related technologies will enhance Jeju’s appeal to younger travelers and encourage repeat visits.
Jeju is South Korea’s largest island, known for its resorts and hiking trails. It is also the country’s first autonomous province, actively experimenting with blockchain. In 2021, it introduced a blockchain-based contact-tracing app for COVID-19, and local officials continue exploring other ways to integrate the technology into the regional economy.
In March 2024, Jeju officials discussed the possibility of using NFT in tourism, including their application in museums, restaurants, and even the fishing industry.
Rising Crypto Interest in South Korea
Jeju’s decision comes amid growing interest in cryptocurrencies across South Korea. According to Democratic Party representative Lim Kwang-Hyun, in November 2024, crypto users in the country rose by 610,000 to reach 15.6 million — around 30% of the population.
NFT sales in 2024 totaled $8.83 billion, surpassing 2023’s figures by $100 million, though still far below the 2022 record of $23.7 billion.
Expectations for the New Project
This initiative aims to blend modern technology with traditional tourism, potentially enhancing Jeju Island’s reputation as a premier destination for both domestic and international visitors. If successful, the project may serve as a model for other regions looking to adopt blockchain in their travel industries.
