An Ethereum holder lost $4.5 M after 13 wallets were compromised. The incident was reported by analyst Specter, who tracks suspicious activity on the blockchain.
According to the researcher, the wallets had remained inactive for several years. The attack took place on June 5, when the attacker withdrew funds worth a total of $4.5 M.
How Much Money Was Saved
The owner noticed the attack before the attacker could gain access to all of the assets. They managed to transfer and secure another $4.7 M, protecting nearly half of their capital from being withdrawn.
Specter said the stolen funds have already begun moving through laundering methods designed to make them harder to trace.
Likely Cause
The analyst noted that the exact attack method remains unknown. However, he believes the most likely scenario is that the private keys were compromised, possibly after the victim installed malicious software or a similar tool that provided access to their devices.
