South Korean law enforcement spent months searching for a suspect in a crypto scam who went into hiding after multiple procedures to alter his appearance. According to investigators, the man stole around $12 M from 158 investors, then failed to appear in court and disappeared.
The investigation revealed that the man spent about $16,000 on cosmetic procedures — changing his eyelids, nose, and facial contours. He also used wigs, disposable phones, and moved frequently. To stay hidden, he enlisted the help of a lawyer’s assistant, while routing funds through crypto transactions.
Despite these efforts, police tracked him down using phone data, online search history, and surveillance cameras. Ten months after his disappearance, police located him at an apartment, where a search uncovered only $75,000 in cash.
