Crypto Companies Demand Frontier AI Access To Fight Off Automated Exploits

According to an open letter released on August 10, Bitcoin Core developers and security researchers called on leading AI labs to grant them early access to their most powerful models. Security teams argue these frontier tools are essential to spot and patch critical code vulnerabilities before bad actors exploit them.

Open-source crypto under attack

The letter highlights that the crypto ecosystem runs on open-source software, securing trillions of dollars in user funds. Unlike TradFi, exploiting a crypto wallet, library, or node software allows attackers to drain assets instantly and irreversibly, making proactive vulnerability hunting a matter of survival.

Currently, top-tier AI labs restrict early access to advanced security research tools to a select group of corporate partners. As a result, independent Bitcoin devs are left relying on less capable, public open-weight models that frequently trigger safety guardrails when processing security audit queries.

What the devs are asking for?

The Bitcoin Policy Institute has already flagged multiple independent reports from open-source maintainers. Their data reveals that sophisticated threat actors, including state-sponsored hacker groups, are actively leveraging advanced AI capabilities to run non-stop automated attacks against crypto libraries and core protocols.

"Defenders need the frontier. Please give them a fair head start," the letter urged.

To level the playing field, digital asset defenders are asking frontier labs to establish dedicated, trusted-access programs. They are requesting early access to top-tier models, dedicated compute budgets for deep audits, secure environments for analyzing embargoed code, and direct communication channels with lab security teams.
