Coinbase and Amazon Web Services have launched a system that lets autonomous AI agents independently pay for access to data, APIs, and online services. The companies embedded the x402 payment protocol directly into standard web infrastructure, bringing crypto payments into the existing web stack.

The new system allows software agents to purchase access to paid content without creating an account, linking a credit card, or any manual approval.

Coinbase designed x402 to run on USDC stablecoin payments. An agent sends a request to a service, receives the access price, automatically processes the payment, and immediately gets access to the resource it needs.

Amazon integrated x402 support directly into AWS CloudFront and WAF — the infrastructure that powers roughly a quarter of the entire internet.

"Developers now have the ability to sell digital services directly to AI systems, which can pay for each individual request without connecting traditional payment services," the website says.
