Canadian national Cameron Albert Redman has been sentenced to one year in prison for a series of cybercrimes carried out using the social media platform X. In 2022, together with accomplices, he hacked over 200 accounts and stole cryptocurrency and NFTs worth $794.000. The victims included well-known artists and brands.
High-Profile Accounts Targeted
Reports indicate that Redman and his team took over accounts belonging to prominent digital artists and major projects, including Mike “Beeple” Winkelmann, Gary Vaynerchuk, the Nouns collection, and Louis Vuitton. Using these accounts, they posted fake giveaways and shared links to phishing websites.
Victims were persuaded to connect their wallets and approve what appeared to be a harmless transaction. In reality, the scammers gained access and immediately drained the wallets of their assets.
Not His First Offense
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Redman already had a prior conviction for stealing more than $40 million through SIM-swapping - a method used to hijack mobile phone numbers in order to access online accounts. He served one year at that time, but as court records reveal, this did not stop him.
“A year after his release, he was already back in his father’s basement looking for new ways to profit from crime,” the court documents state.
Redman was found guilty of wire fraud and identity theft. He pleaded guilty in May. The U.S. Attorney’s Office described him as a “skilled and successful” cybercriminal.
