The family of Didi Taihuttu, known as the “Bitcoin Family,” has completely overhauled their approach to cryptocurrency security following a series of attacks targeting digital asset holders.
In 2017, they sold everything for bitcoin and have since led a nomadic lifestyle. Now, their private keys are hidden across the globe.
Security Concerns
In an interview with CNBC, Didi Taihuttu revealed that the family now uses a hybrid protection system, moving away from fully relying on hardware wallets. He emphasized that even in the event of a robbery, attackers would only be able to access a small amount of funds.
“Even at gunpoint, I can’t transfer more than what’s on my phone or in the wallet. And that’s not much,” he explained.
The shift comes in response to a wave of crimes targeting cryptocurrency holders. According to Taihuttu, the family received direct threats and decided to radically change their security protocols.
How the Family Now Protects Their Crypto Assets
The family’s main wallet seed phrase is now unusable without additional data. It has been encrypted, split into four parts, and distributed across different continents. These data fragments are stored on fireproof metal plates.
Some of the plates are hidden in physically secure locations, while others are managed via blockchain services. In addition, part of the seed phrase has been manually altered—without knowledge of the modifications, the phrase is useless.
According to Taihuttu, approximately 65% of the family’s funds are held in cold storage. For daily expenses and trading, they use hot wallets with multisignature protection.
The family continues to live on the road but no longer shares real-time geolocation. In the past, malicious actors tracked them through social media posts. Following the threats, the family has completely stopped this practice.
