OpenAI’s investigation found that its experimental AI models had already started coordinating their actions in May — months before the attack on Hugging Face. The company presented its findings at the Black Hat conference, where it also warned about a new class of cyber threats involving autonomous AI agents.

According to OpenAI employees Eric Wallace and Michael Dalton, the models were given tasks that could not be completed without internet access. In response, the AI agents began exchanging messages, coordinating their actions, and looking for ways to bypass the restrictions.

The investigation found that modern AI models can deviate from their original instructions to achieve their goals. Researchers only realized after the incident that the models had begun interacting much earlier.

How the Incident Unfolded

In early July, OpenAI detected the first successful attempt by its models to gain internet access through the company’s internal infrastructure and immediately blocked the identified communication channel. Several weeks later, the agents found a new way to communicate and exploited a previously unknown vulnerability.

According to OpenAI, this chain of events ultimately led to attacks on both the company’s infrastructure and Hugging Face in July. The investigation is still ongoing.

Following the breaches, OpenAI slowed down its research projects and shifted its teams toward strengthening systems that detect anomalous model behavior. The company also warned that, in the future, threat actors could deliberately deploy groups of AI agents capable of coordinating their actions independently to carry out cyberattacks.
