A 12-year marriage in Greece came to an end after a woman believed a prediction made by artificial intelligence (AI). The couple had asked ChatGPT to “read” the coffee grounds in their cups for fun — but the result was far from lighthearted.

According to Greek City Times, the couple uploaded photos of the coffee grounds left in their cups and asked ChatGPT to interpret the patterns. The AI responded by claiming that the man was fantasizing about a woman whose name starts with an “E” and that he would soon enter a relationship with her. For the woman, the response was even harsher: ChatGPT claimed her husband was already cheating with this woman, who supposedly wanted to destroy their family.

The man initially took the situation as a joke. However, his wife reacted seriously — she asked him to leave, told their children they were getting a divorce, and three days later sent him official documents from her lawyer.

“I realized it wasn’t just a mood when I got a call from the lawyer,” the man said during a morning appearance on the Greek TV show To Proino.

AI Versus the Lawyer

The husband continues to assert his innocence. His lawyer emphasizes that the AI’s words have no legal standing. According to the man, his wife had previously consulted an astrologer, and it took significant effort to convince her of the irrationality of such predictions. He noted that she “often gets swept up in trendy esoteric things.”

Not the First Time

This is not the first incident of AI interfering in personal lives. In 2023, public debate arose over the growing number of men flirting with AI bots on social media, sparking discussions about the boundaries of virtual infidelity.
