Shrapnel
This is an FPS game where you have complete control over your gear, with every item being an NFT. It’s designed to be the first big-budget 3D FPS game built on blockchain with exciting gameplay.
Shrapnel is set in a post-apocalyptic world. To stay alive, players need to explore dangerous places, fight against enemy groups and creatures, and scavenge for food and supplies. The game includes realistic physics, terrain you can destroy, lots of ways to customize your character, and different modes like single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer.
In this game, players can sell or rent their gear to others. The game also lets you build and customize your own landscapes and structures so that the world feels more real and personal. To me, it feels like a blockchain-powered version of Fortnite but with better graphics.
Illuvium
It is a decentralized 3D fantasy role-playing game with an open world, built on the Immutable blockchain. In the game, players can explore the world, capture creatures (similar to Pokémon), gather resources, and participate in PvP battles in arenas.
The game was released on November 28, 2023, but it has not yet fully realized its potential.
Players have their own customizable character with whom they will explore the open world of a very unusual planet, accompanied by a drone. They collect resources, craft equipment, and, most importantly, search for and capture the local wildlife called Illuvials.
Illuvials are the main gameplay element. They can be bred, upgraded, and used in arena battles. They can have different rarities, elements, and classes.
In addition to the creatures, players can gather valuable minerals and other resources in the game, which can later be used to create equipment. Another important in-game resource is fuel, which is produced on NFT (non-fungible token) lands. The lands were released in a limited edition of 100,000. So if the game becomes really popular, the lands will be worth a lot of money.
By the way, the initial sale of the lands was conducted through an auction, and the most expensive plots were sold for 76 ETH. It may be a more profitable investment than a suburban cottage. This is not financial advice.
Star Atlas
Star Atlas is a multiplayer metaverse built on the Solana blockchain. The game is still in development but is already available on the Epic Store.
Star Atlas is an MMORPG with an open world set in the year 2620. In the distant future, three main factions have emerged:
The MUD territory, controlled by humanity.
The ONI region, governed by alien races.
The Ustur sector, controlled by sentient androids.
These groups are always fighting for power, resources, and control over the government. As a citizen of the Star Atlas faction, you will have the opportunity to influence the result of this intergalactic conflict while earning rewards for your efforts in the form of $ATLAS and $POLIS tokens.
The game is being worked on right now, and as of 2023, Star Atlas has the following features:
SAGE Labs: Resource gathering and collection, as well as gaining rewards based on gameplay skills.
Faction Fleet: Passive resource farming using NFT (non-fungible token) ships.
Star Atlas Showroom R2: Active resource farming using NFT ships.
Blocklords
Blocklords is a medieval strategy game for PC that’s been in development since 2019. It’s a great example of how challenging it can be to build not just a game, but also a fully player-driven economy using blockchain technology.
As a strategy game, everything revolves around the player's skills. Some examples of gameplay elements include farming, fighting battles, managing resources, or taking control of territories. You can pick the playstyle you like best, and every decision will help make the game feel more unique.
The game mainly focuses on fun and engaging gameplay and building a strong community, not putting much of a focus on its blockchain features. You don’t need NFTs to play, but if you have them, you can bring them into the game to unlock extra perks and options.
The beta version of Blocklords was launched in 2023, and gained popularity among 5,000+ players.
Phantom Galaxies
Phantom Galaxies is a multiplayer sci-fi open-world game for PC where you jump into fast-paced battles using mechs. You can pick from four different classes of space fighters, each with unique gear and abilities.
Phantom Galaxies was made by the Australian developer Blowfish (part of Animoca), and went from alpha to beta in May 2023, later launching in early access on Epic Games on November 15, 2023. There’s also a non-blockchain version available on Steam, also as an early access game.
Conclusion
Blockchain gaming is here to stay as more games come out with improved features, also allowing players to truly own, trade, and earn from their in-game items thanks to NFTs. Popular games like Shrapnel, Illuvium, and Star Atlas are setting the precedent for how gaming and blockchain technology can indeed smoothly work together. As these games grow and develop further, they’re bound to give its users new ways to benefit from their time with digital ownership. You can be an experienced gamer or simply curious about how this tech is incorporated into gaming, and you’ll certainly be surprised how well it makes the blockchain interactive.
